New theories proposed by scientists for lightning

On Jan. 15th, 2002, a research about the theories of ball lightning appeared in the academic journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These theories were respectively put forward by physical chemists, physicists and chemical engineers. They proposed three theories to explain the causes of ball lightning. The main ideas are as follow:

1.Ball lightning is made up from water droplets that consist of hydrated ions, which release energy through the reaction of ions. Upon this theory, ball lightning is an electrochemical structure containing plasma. This structure is maintained up to the sutle balanced relationship between the temperature, pressure, magnetic field and gravitational field.

2.Ball lightening is made from twisted polymeric filaments that release energy through electric discharge on the surface. Upon this theory, all of the natural particles in the ash, such as those from cellulose and silica, can form a filamentous structure. These filaments turned into a highly charged ball in a polymeric way. When the ball discharges the electricity on its surface, light and heat are radiated.

3.Ball lightening is made from nano particles of metal, while it releases energy through the oxidization of these articles on the surface. In this theory, normal lightening can make things like soil or wood diffuse metallic vapor, which is condensed to be a netty ball with nano metallic particles.

Each of the theories is persuasive to some extent, especially the third one, which seems to be more persuasive about explaining the reason for the traverse of the ball lightening through walls and closed windows.

In a word, ball lightening is not only interesting but also contains a lot of secrets. Once human can find the truth about it, it will have a great impact on people’s life in future. If so, perhaps the discovery will not just about the truly derivation of self-burning of human body and Tunguska Event, new energy sources that are efficient and clean are also able to be found.
