People discovered acid rain for the first time in 1872, when British chemist Mr. Smith found that the rain in London was obviously acidic. Thus he firstly use the proper noun "acid rain" in one of his works, suggesting that acid rain was caused by the acidic substances released by the burning fuels.
In 1960s, Sweden soil scientists Auden found that acid rain is a pollution phenomenon which covered a large area of Europe. The acidity of rainfall and surface water was higher and higher, leading to the slow growth of forests, increasing illnesses for plants and quickened erosion of materials.
The scientific team built up by Sweden government in 1972 submitted a report called Air Pollution across Borders -- the Effects of the Sulfur in the Air and Water on Environment to the UNHEC. From then on, acid rain has become an important global research subject. One after another, some countries started studying on this aspect.
