There is mainly brown forest soil widely spreading in the mountain area, while those fertile soils which help northern crops to grow, such as black soil, chernozem and meadow, can be extensively found in plain regions, and during which, Songnen plain has saline-alkali soil on the west, Sanjiang plain includes swamps, and there are large-area marshes and reeds coastways. In recent years, the large-scale forest shelter belts have been built in the west of this region and have made great difference on protecting this area, agriculture and livestock programming in particular, from the aggressive sands blown by the wind.
