A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou county located in Southwest China's Sichuan province at 9:19 pm on Aug.8 at the depth of 20 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. And the 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Jinghe county in Bortala Mongolian autonomous prefecture at 7:27 am on 9th August a depth of 11 kilometers. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang have called for all-out efforts on relief and rescue work.
In accordance with the instructions of President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and other leaders of the CPC Central Committee and the Central Government, the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) and the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China (MCA) activated Level III National Emergency Response for the 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Jiuzhaigou county, Sichuan Province. A joint work team was set up by China National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Earthquake Relief Headquarters of the State Council. It is led by Gu Zhaoxi, Vice Minister of Ministry of Civil Affairs, and Yin Chaomin, Deputy Director of China Earthquake Administration, and consists of representatives from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Land and Resources, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Transport and National Health and Family Planning Commission. The work team has been sent to the disaster-hit area to guide and support local relief work, including emergency rescue, emergency relocation of the affected people, treatment of the wounded, recovery of transport and communications etc.
At 09:00 of August 9th, the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China activated Level IV National Emergency Response for the 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Jinghe County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. A work team has been sent to the disaster-hit areas to inspect the disaster conditions and guides the local disaster relief work. After the earthquake, the Civil Affairs Department of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region instantly activated level Ⅲ Emergency Response. A work team, which consists of officers from the civil affairs department, the earthquake administration and other departments of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has been sent to the affected areas to help carry out disaster relief work.
So far, the death toll from a magnitude-7.0 earthquake that struck Jiuzhaigou county in Sichuan province on Tuesday night rose to 25 and the tally of the injured rose to 525, according to local authorities. All-out rescue efforts were continuing.
