The northeast of the Sanjiang Plain was naturally formed by the three rivers' (the Heilongjiang River, Songhua River, Wusulijiang River) consistently scouring out, whose scope comes as 600 thousand square kilometers and altitude is between 50~60meters. The plain is quite flat which contribute to it's being commodity grain base of the key construction in China, while the low-lying land would lead to some floods.

The Songnen Plain is situated in the central part of the northeast of China and is at an elevation of 140~180 meters. There are many lakes spreading all over the place, and saline alkaline depressions and alkaline lakes consist in the area between Anda and Dorbod Mongolia Autonomous Region. The Liaohe Plain lies in the downstream of Liaohe River and below 50 meters above sea level. The bent river course, small drop and tidal backwater on its estuary all make it easy for the plain to break out floods and waterlog. The Sonnen Plain and Liaohe Plain are collectively called Songliao Plain, whose watershed is height between 200 meters to 300 meters.
