Tanghe Reservoir is located among the 3 cities of Liaoyang, Anshan and Benxi, 39 km away from Liaoyang City,which is a large reservoir of Taizi River tributary. The main utilities of Tanghe Reservoir are flood control, industrial water and irrigation, power generation, comprehensive utilization of fish and so on.It was designed for controlling severe floods, with a total capacity of 707 million cubic meters,including the utilizable capacity of 258 million cubic meters, flood storage capacity of 368 million cubic meters. The pivot buildings are composed of earth dam, water conveyance Road, spillway and power station.
The drainage area above the damsite is 1228 square kilometers, accounting for 84% of the area of the Tanghe River Basin, accounting for 9% of the Taizi River Basin area. The damsite is the continuation of the Changbai Mountains. The reservoir is surrounded by mountains of 300~ 500 meters above sea level.
The valley area is about 320 meters wide, from south to north, with the of gradient 1/600~1/700, on both sides of the peak elevation 160~170 meters, the right bank is steeper(average gradient 1 : 1.4); the left bank is slower(average gradient 1:1.8). The dam area landform is relatively simple, no distribution of floodplain terraces, the flood plain distributes in the river on both sides, 2~5 meters higher than the river bed, its surface consists of sand and gravel.
The average annual precipitation in Tanghe River basin is 786mm, and the distribution of precipitation is uneven in the year. It is mainly concentrated from 7 to August, which accounts for the maximum temperature 50% of the annual precipitation. Maximum temperature : 30 ℃ in July. Minimum temperature: -17.1°C in January.
