On May 11th, 2021, team members of Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service (DRRKS) attended the 11th National Forum of Integrated Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Sustainable Development in the city of Lanzhou in China. The theme of this conference is about the modernization of natural disaster prevention system and capability. It’s further divided into three sub-themes; (1) constructing systems and mechanisms for disaster prevention, mitigation and relief; (2) innovations and the applications of science and technology in disaster prevention, mitigation and relief; (3) improving natural disaster prevention capability.
For the first session, the presenters discussed and shared experience on implementing local management responsibility, improving social involvement, increasing market participation, and improving overall disaster reduction capability. For the second session, the presenters shared new ideas and achievements from science and technology innovation in the field of disaster prevention, reduction and relief. In addition, they discussed the coordination of different technologies including remote sensing, big data, internet of things and mobile communication used in this field and shared successful case studies. They also discussed effective paths in improving natural disaster prevention capability by using modern technologies. For the third one, the presenters shared the pilot experience and results from the national census on integrated disaster risk. They discussed the underlying data for the natural disaster risks and the applications through science translation of natural disaster census data such as disaster prevention zoning, continuous data mining, dynamic data management and effective data usage.
