An earthquake of 8.6 degree occurred in the area of Chayu-Motuo in Tibet on 15th August, 1950. Because of the unusual weather in 1954, 21 provinces in China suffered from the flood and 7 provinces around the middle and lower stream of the Yangtze River, Huai River and Hai River. That is to say the middle and north of Anhui, the east of Hubei Province, the middle and north of Hunan Province, the northeast of Jiangxi Province, the north of Jiangsu Province, the northeast of Henan Province and the middle of Hebei were the severely afflicted areas, the total damage area was 1327.5 million hectares and the area of disaster was 1073.1 million hectares; the collapsed house was more than 1,000,000 and the affected people were 60,000,000. Even more than 8 million kilograms of food and 4 million loads of cotton were cut. The water level of Wuhan, Yangtze River had maintained above the highest level 25.28 meters for 58 days, and even up to 29.73 meters in 19th, August. The cities along the river were affected a lot, the Yangtze River embankment had collapsed in 44 spot, floods also divided into 13 reaches, and every province displaced 15 million people to other places temporarily.
