In recent one hundred years the most serious flood disasters of the Songhua River basin happened in 1932 and 64 counties (flags and cities) in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia and other provinces which were affected by the flood. Harbin city was flooded for a month that caused twenty thousand people died.
The flood caused widespread flooding in the middle and lower reaches of Nenjiang and on both sides of the main stream of Songhua River. Most areas of Heilongjiang were affected by the disaster and the counties and villages of Jilin and Inner Mongolia along the river also suffered varying degrees of flooding.
Heilongjiang province had some serious disaster areas, such as Harbin city, Hulan Area, Bayan County, Nehe City, Tailai County, Suihua City, Longjiang County, Zhaozhou County, Dalai Countryside and Lanxi Country. The other 26 counties were less affected by the disaster, such as Fuyu County and Gannan County. The affected area was about 1 million 990 thousand Shang, which accounted for 80% of all cultivated land in Heilongjiang province.
Original Jilin province has six counties affected mainly. They are Yilan, Huachuan, Tongjiang, Fujin, Binxian and Fangzheng(Now most of them belong to Heilongjiang Province). Nearly 300 thousand people were affected by the disaster.
The original Xingan province (now the right bank of Nenjiang to which Inner Mongolia belongs) was seriously affected by the flood in those years. There were 18 flags and 919 villages were affected, such as Nawen Banner, Bayan Banner, Autonomous Banner of Morin Dawa, Arun Banner, Duerbote Mongolian Autonomous Banner. The number of people affected was nearly 100 thousand, which accounted for 17.9% of the total population and 2534 deaths.
Taonan, Tao an, Zhenlai and Tongyu which ever belonged to Feng Tian (now belongs to Jilin) were located in the Nenjiang River Basin, suffering the flood. The number of people affected reached 65 thousand and 900 and the farmland was drowned about 100 thousand shang. The number of houses collapsed was up to 4878 and the number of houses immersed in water was up to 7255.
Harbin facing Songhua River was the worst hit. More than 20 levees broke in succession when the flood peak arrived. A large number of rivers poured into the city which caused the inside and outside of the most concentrated streets were seriously flooded and the maximum water depth was above 5Ni. The flooded acreage of the city reached to 11 square kilometer and the flood volume that flowed into the city reached to 12 million 605 thousand m3 . The flood subsided slowly and Harbin was flooded for a month. The city has 380 thousand residents. 238 thousand people were affected. 20 thousand of which were killed and 120 thousand of which displaced. The traffic of Harbin collapsed and all the railway trunk lines to the east, the west, the South and the north were all interrupted.
The North Manchu railway was seriously damaged in that year. According to incomplete statistics, a total of about 100 railroads have been destroyed and cumulative length more than 20km. In addition, at least 20 bridges were destroyed.
