July and August in 1958, A lot of rainstorms with wide range, long duration, occurred in the south and middle of the northeast region. The length of the rainfall days, so many times of the rainstorm, the size of the accumulation rainfall, the extensive range of that its covered were rare in nearly 40 years. The rainstorm has the following characteristics:
The range of the rain area was large , the range of the rain area of this year rainstorm was from Daling River , Liaodong Peninsula in the south to Hulan River and Tangwang river system in the north-central parts of the northeast region , and that includes Raoyang River , middle and lower reaches of Liao River ， Huntai water system , trunk stream and tributaries in the middle and lower reaches of the Yalu River , trunk stream and tributaries of Second Songhua River , Lalin River, Mudan River , Tumen River those rivers . Widespread heavy rain and rainstorm in such a wide range are rare in history.
Duration of rainfall was long; at downstream of the Yalu River in the southeastern part of the district, during sixty three days from June 27th to August 27th, day of precipitation was up to 47 days. Days of precipitation in Shenyang, Liaoyang, and Jinzhou those stations were more than forty days. The area of Hulan River , Tangwang River was in the north of rain area , the rainfall was mainly occurred during July 16th to August 15th , days of precipitation was also about 25 days , which was also rare in local records .
The amount of rainstorm was large, from June 27th to August 27th, one rainstorm after another, times of major rainstorms were nine, which was the outstanding feature of the rainstorm in this year. For the nine times rainstorm , rainfall in the rainstorm center above 100 mm each time , the maximum has reached 542 mm .
The rainstorm caused four consecutive overlapping floods in the Liao River trunk stream, occurred long periods of high flow and high water levels in the lower reached of Liao River, led to serious floods. And the deluge occurred in Dayang River, lower reaches of Yalu River and Hulan River, Tangwang River those rivers moreover.
