The Laoha River is the source of the West Liaohe River. In ancient times, it was called Wuhouqin water, "Old Hamulun" came from Mongolian, "Old Ha" came from Qidan language, which means "iron". Originated from Qilaotu Mountains of Hebei Province, which is 1490 meters above sea level, it flows northeast into the territory of Chifeng Inner Mongolia Autonomous region in Weng Niute Banner and Naiman Banner at the junction. After confluence with the West Lamulen River from west to east, it becomes the western Liaohe River.

The length of Laoha River is about 425km , with a basin area of about 33,000 square kilometers, its main tributaries are Heili River, Kuntou River, YingJin He, Yangchang River, Bong River, Yinma River and other rivers. In the upper reaches of the narrow valley, both sides of the river run to the tall mountain, valley, water rapids. The middle reaches of the river gradually enter the loess hilly region , because of the earlier agricultural development , the vegetation coverage rate is low , which causes the soil erosion to be very serious . In this basin, there are many tributaries on both sides, the water volume is soaring, the river is advancing among the hills, and the river channel is abnormally curved, which makes the river bed swing frequently. From the lower reaches of the river, the river is injected into the alluvial plain. No tributaries come into the river, and the river bed is very small. The flow rate of the river slows down, thus depositing the upper and middle reaches of the river, which raises the riverbed and is not conducive to the stability of the river.

There is a long history of human civilization in the Laoha River Basin. The ancestors who created the "Hongshan Culture" in the Neolithic Age lived on the banks of the LaoHa River. The capital of the Liao country, Zhongjing, was established by the Qidan nationality. Many sunrises and sunsets have also been met on the banks of rivers.
