The online map of three steps of terrain in China is from the atlas of China National Geographic Map, compiled by the editorial board of China National Geographic Map, and published by China Encyclopedia press in November 2011.
The terrain of mainland China is higher in the West and lower in the East, forming three steps from west to East.
The first step is the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an average elevation above 4,000 meters, known as the "roof of the world". The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is connected to the Pamir Plateau in the west, the Kunlun Mountains and Qilian Mountains in the north, and the Hengduan Mountains in the east to distinguish it from the second step.
The second step boundary is between the northern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the Daxinganling Mountains, Taihang Mountain, Wushan, and the eastern edge of Xuefeng. It is mainly composed of the Inner Mongolia Plateau, the Loess Plateau, the Yungui Plateau and the Tarim Basin, the Junggar Basin, and the Sichuan Basin. The basin is composed of Altai Mountains, Yinshan Mountains, Helan Mountains, and Qinling Mountains. The altitude of the plateau surface is mostly 1000-2000 meters, while the deep subsidence of the Turpan and Sichuan Basins is high. For example, the Sichuan Basin fell below 500 meters, while the bottom of the Aiding Lake in Turpan Basin was 154.31 meters below sea level.
The third step is the wide plains and hills in eastern China, which are the lowest first-level land steps. There are mainly the Northeast Plain, the North China Plain, and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which are less than 200 meters above sea level, and the Changbai Mountains, Shandong hills, and coastal hills and mountains along the coast of Zhejiang and Fujian.
Outside the coastal hills and mountains, from the north to the south, China's inland sea, the Bohai Sea, and the marginal seas of the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea. The shallow continental shelf with a coastal water depth of 200 meters and a width of about 400 to 600 kilometers is an underwater extension of the continent. On the vast sea, the islands are scattered and the largest one is Taiwan Island.
