The country is divided into 14 governorates and cities: Rif Dimashq, Homs, Hama, Ladhiqiyah, Idlib, Tartus, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Hasakeh, Daraa, Suwayda, Quneitra, Aleppo, and Damascus City. Damascus is the capital of Syria and a world-famous ancient city, known as the "City in the Kingdom of Heaven", located on the right bank of the Barada River in southwest Syria. The city is built on the slopes of Mount Kessin and covers an area of about 100 square kilometers. It has a history of more than 4,500 years. The population is 1.6 million (2022).
