Syria is a West Asian country with a total area of 185,180 km2 (of which 183,630 km2 (99.4%) is land and 1,550 km2 (0.6%) is water). Syria has 24.8% of its land area under agriculture, of which 4.47% is under permanent crops, of which 13,560 km2 is irrigated arable land. The Euphrates is the longest and most important river in Syria, accounting for more than 80% of Syria's water resources, and its main left bank tributaries, the Balykh and the Habur, are small perennial rivers, both originating in the Syrian-Turkish border area. The right bank tributaries of the Euphrates are mostly small seasonal streams called dry rivers. Overall, the climate in Syria is relatively dry, with about three-fifths of the country receiving less than 250 mm of rainfall per year, and Syria's total water resources amount to 46.1 km3.
