Turkey is a candidate country for the European Union because it is located across two continents of Asia and Europe and implements the European model in the fields of politics, economy and culture. Turkey is a member of NATO, a founding member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and a member of the G20. With a strong industrial base, it is one of the world's emerging economies and one of the fastest growing countries in the world. Turkey's GDP in 2021 was $802.7 billion, GDP per capita was $9,539, and GDP growth rate was 11.0%. Turkey's geographical location and geopolitical strategic significance are extremely important, and it is the crossroads connecting Europe and Asia. The capital, Ankara, has a land area of 783,600 square kilometers and a population of 84.68 million (December 2021). More than 80% of the country is Turkish and about 15% Kurdish.
