International Training Workshop on Resource & Environment Scientific Data Sharing and Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service held in Pakistan

From September 30th to October 4th, 2019, the International Training Workshop on Resource & Environment Scientific Data Sharing and Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service, hosted by China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences (CPJRC), was held at Department of Earth Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan. Entrusted by the CPJRC, professor Juanle Wang, the technical director of the Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service (DRRKS) of International Cooperation of the International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology under the Auspices of UNESCO (IKCEST), was in charge of the lectures and implementation of the workshop. Nearly 70 students and researchers from more than a dozen universities and research institutes, including Quaid-i-Azam University, Peshawar University, Karakoram International University, National University of Science and Technology and Punjab University, attended the training.

The theme of this training is Resource & Environment Scientific Data Sharing and Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service. The main contents of the training are as follows: (1) technology of data collection, storage and sharing of resource and environment. (2) standard specifications of data sharing of resource and environment; (3) technology of remote sensing investigation and monitoring of typical disaster information; (4) software platform, technology and operation & maintenance services of Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service system. During the training, professor Juanle Wang gave lectures on “Resources and Environmental Scientific Data Integration and Sharing in the Belt & Road area” and “Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service”. Kun Bu, senior engineer of the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave lectures on “Open source GIS applications and best practices” and “The Design and Implementation for information system based on WEB and GIS Technology (Application in DRRKS)” and practiced on computer. Associate professor Fei Yang gave lectures on “Assessment and Monitoring of Heat Wave Disaster” and “Extreme Cold Temperature Disaster Monitoring and Assessment”. Kai Cheng, Xuehua Han and Yuelei Yuan gave lectures on “Chinese forest type mapping using spectral-spatial-temporal features”, “Extraction and analysis of disaster-related information from web text” and “ Data management and daily operation services of Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service platform” respectively.

Jing Yao, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of China to Pakistan, V. Jensen, director of UNESCO Office in Islamabad, Qasim Jan, president of the Academy of Sciences of Pakistan, Safdar Ali Shah, director of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Office of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, M. Ali, president of Quaid-i-Azam University, Attaullah Shah, president of Karakoram International University, Razia Sultana, president of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar, Tianhua Hong, executive director of the CPJRC, and others attended the opening ceremony. And more than 200 participants also attended the opening ceremony, including trainees and representatives of teachers and students from Quaid-i-Azam University and other universities in Islamabad.

The training workshop promoted exchanges and cooperation with Pakistani universities, expanded the network of experts, and laid the foundation for further promoting the construction of Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service System.
