Introduction to the national emblem : The design of the lion holding the Tomahawk with its forelimb is the personal symbol of the holy king since the 8th century. The silver Tomahawk is the weapon of Saint Olaf, the protector and defender of Norwegian freedom. The crown on the head of the golden lion is simple, reflecting the unique style of metal making in Scandinavia. The crown on the top of the coat of arms symbolizes the majesty and supreme power of the royal family.
