In 2020, a total of 8251 SCI journal papers were published in the disaster risk reduction field. In addition, a total of 161 countries have carried out relevant research in this field according to various experts. Among them, the top 12 countries or regions with more than 250 papers were mainland China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, India, Germany, Japan, Australia, France, Canada, Iran, and Spain, respectively. Mainland China had the highest number of publications worldwide, whereas, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) had the highest citation rate. The USGS accounted for more than 60% of total attributions, followed by Ist Nazl Geofis & Vulcanol in Italy and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Regarding Chinese papers, the institutions with the highest paper citation rate were Wuhan University and China University of Mining and Technology with more than 300 papers overall.
The papers were mainly distributed across 12 disciplines, as follows: Environmental Science, Geoscience Multidisciplinary, Water Conservancy, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, Geochemistry and Geophysics, Public Environment and Occupational Health, Environmental Research, Green and Sustainable Technology, Engineering Geology, Remote Sensing, Engineering Environment, and Physical Geography. Research on disaster prevention in China covers 68 subject areas but are mainly concentrated on these 12 disciplines, with more than 100 papers: Environmental Science, Geoscience Multidisciplinary, Water Conservancy, Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering Geology, Engineering Environment, Remote Sensing, Geochemistry and Geophysics, Green and Sustainable Technology, Public Environment and Occupational Health, Environmental Research, and Physical Geography. In the field of disaster prevention in China, there are few studies on green and sustainable technology.
The four main topics that have been researched the most include research on health risks caused by heavy metals in the water, soil, and atmosphere, research on geological disaster monitoring based on geographic information systems, natural disaster risk management research from the perspective of vulnerability, and research on climate change triggers for extreme weather and climate events.
In the appendix, 68 abstracts from papers with a higher citation index, similar to the research direction followed by the Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service (DRRKS) sub-platform of the International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology (IKCEST) are selected.
