"The president of the Commission for Instruments and Methods of Observation (CIMO), Professor B. Calpini, opened the seventeenth session of CIMO on 12 October 2018 at 9.30 a.m.
in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Permanent Representative of the Netherlands with WMO, Mr Gerard van der Steenhoven, welcomed all the participants to Amsterdam. He recognized the immense value to our society of instruments and methods of observation and the related data. He indicated that several meteorological phenomena had been in the news headlines every day in the past week. This was a sign of the importance of meteorology to our society. He stressed that producing appropriate forecasts and warnings for society could not be done without standardization and that CIMO was extremely valuable as, through its standardization activities, it enabled us to speak the same language. Finally, he noted that, everyone was becoming a data provider , through the sensors in cars, phones, and so on. Dealing with the new data would represent a serious challenge for the meteorological community."
