From the perspective of the disaster-causing factor, the research on the risk assessment theory and methods of a single natural disaster by the domestic and foreign scholars has being increasingly maturing, such as: Manen and Brinkhuis, Tingsanchalil and Karim, Carreno et al., Mokrech et al., Nakajima et al., Romeo, Sharma and Shakya, Granger, Chenghu Zhou, Aceves - Quesada et al., Dingguo Ma, Chongfu Huang and Peijun Shi, QinglinYao , Xinian Wang, Haiyan Liang, Rignot E., Beibei Hu and so on. A lot of scholars respectively has carried out researches on risk assessment on single catastrophes theoretically and practically such as earthquake, flood, volcano and storm surge.
Rikitake T used the probability of earthquake occurrence and seismic intensity as the main indexes to evaluate the risk of earthquake disaster in the Tokyo area within 10 years.
Hail j. w. used the data on the capacity and frequency of rainfall, and the losses caused by floods in England and Wales to analyze . It is concluded that rainfall and rainfall frequency is the main influencing factors of the risk of flood disaster.
Qinghua Gao and others used the catastrophe index to evaluate the risk of disasters in the natural disaster risk analysis for China. They try to the find the function relationship between disaster losses and disaster frequency at the same disaster level which has been disposed before, and thus to form the expression of catastrophe index , and then the level of China's natural disaster zoning map are obtained.
