The Democratic Republic of Congo was originally a Belgian colony, which was called Belgium Congo at that time. It became independent in February 1960. It is also called the Republic of Congo with its neighboring countries, the names of the two countries are spelled with the names of the capitals to distinguish them. On August 1, 1964, it was renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On May 17, 1997, the armed forces of the Alliance for the liberation of democratic forces of the Congo led by Lang Kabila captured the capital, Kinshasa, and declared himself president and restored the name of the country to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
On January 10, 2019, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Election Commission said that opposition presidential candidate Felix Zisekedi won the presidential election of the Democratic Republic of Congo and was sworn in on January 18.
