Introduction
The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala is the scientific body of the Government of Guatemala. The main purpose of the Agency is to study and monitor atmospheric, geophysical and hydrological phenomena and events, prevent natural disasters and make recommendations to governments and the private sector in the event of natural disasters. The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala is responsible for four main scientific disciplines, involving seismology, volcanology, meteorology and hydrology. The National Institute for Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala was created in March 1976. It became an agency of the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Housing of Guatemala shortly after the devastating earthquake of 1976.
